Get groovin with DDR SuperNOVA 2 for PS2
As a veteran Dance Dance Revolution player, owning all of the games, both import and domestic,
I just had to pick up DDR SuperNOVA 2 when it came out. American releases have generally been lacking since the first release of Dance Dance Revolution for the PSOne back in 2000 (1998 in Japan). In general, home versions in general have always been lacking, even the import ones. However, DDR SuperNOVA2 is definitely a step in the right direction of improvement.
As far as gameplay goes, it’s the same as it has been for the past 10 years, 4 arrows, the baseline of arrows up top, dancers in the background who look like they’re having seizures when dancing to fast songs, and some catchy tunes. There are many things that set this game apart from the previous installments, the main one is the unlock system.
In games prior to DDR SuperNOVA, the unlock system either worked with points, achievements, or playing songs in a certain order to unlock another. In DDR SuperNOVA, however, it all changed. Players were challenged to complete missions on different planets in the DDR Universe (you know you like that plug). Some of these missions seemed almost impossible at times. In my opinion, some were impossible! In DDR SuperNOVA 2’s case, a very good majority of them are very tame. I didn’t have any problem with any of the missions, even the boss ones. I actually kind of cheated and skipped ahead to the boss stages for each group of missions, thinking that I would’ve unlocked everything by doing so. However, I was left high and dry when I discovered that all I unlocked was the songs that I was playing in the boss missions. When you complete a new song, it becomes available in the store to purchase with the points you’ve earend in Hyper Master Mode and Game Mode.

The song list is actually really good. It’s actually pretty shocking to see licenses such as Cascada and Britney Spears (with hair) on a DDR game. Although I’m not the biggest fan of either of these two artists, it’s good to see that Konami is paying attention to the American demographic as far as popular dance music. The Konami originals are also really good too. The song EternuS is a lot of fun. A lot of gallops. Plays almost like Burning Heat from 7th Mix, but a tad easier. A lot of people are going to be very happy when they learn that the boss songs aren’t a couple of Max songs. The first one is called Unreal. It doesn’t even play like a typical boss song. There are a lot of jumps in the stepchart, something I find a little unncessary, but it’s still a nice change. I’ll leave the rest of the song list for you guys to discover. Just know that you won’t be let down.
A new mode has also been introduced in DDR SuperNOVA 2, which is called Combo Challenge. As you can probably guess, this mode is probably the hardest mode to ever be in a Dance Dance Revolution game. Once your combo ends, it’s game over. The various other modes from previous DDR games return, like Survival (formally called Challenge in America and ONI in Japan), Endless, Nonstop, and Workout modes. By playing some of these modes, you are also able to unlock some songs and courses, instead of playing the Hyper Master Mode.
DDR SuperNOVA2 is definitely the best PS2 DDR to come to America thus far. Aside from the new Disney Channel version of DDR, I think we can expect this to be the last DDR game on the PlayStation 2 console. To order your copy now, follow the link below!
