Fobis cares, that’s who. I know, I’ve never heard of them either, until today. We received a letter from the company stating that they are the patent holders on the term (yes, you can do that, it’s called intellectual property) “weemote”. Their product is the one featured on the above-left. The Fobis company created the Weemote product, which is basically a universal remote control for children. It allows kids to take control of their TV (as well as their DVR, but limits the channels they watch. This helps parents regulate what their children are watching. Here’s where things relate to the Wii Remote.
Since everyone who knows about the Wii calls the Wii Remote the Wiimote for short, Fobis feels that this name, which was never patented by Nintendo, is drawing attention not to their product, but to the Wiimote Wii Remote, and causing them a loss in revenue.
The purpose of the company’s letter to us was to demand that we, along with the general public of the planet, stop using the term Wiimote immediately and start using Wii Remote. Will we stop using the term? Probably not. Who really cares about a term. How can you stop people from using a practically universal term? I do sympathize with them about loss of revenue, but still, let’s get real.
