Tabula Rasa Closing In January; NCSoft Laying Off Developers

Another one bites the dust, MMORPG Tabula Rasa closing down.

Those of you following our PC reports probably remember our long series on pseudo-MMORPG Hellate: London, and the company behind the title, Flagship Studios. Well, player subscriptions rates and lack of interest in anything but fantasy-based MMOGs has killed another one, Destination Games’ Tabula Rasa.

The company was helmed by genre legend Richard Garriot, creator of Ultima Online, and published by Korean-based NCSoft. Just a year from its release and Destination Games, NCSoft and the official website have decided to close the game down. Garriot, who departed from the company to pursue Space interests a few weeks ago, has yet to comment on its closure. But he probably knew it was coming.

“We’re going to be scaling down the TR team in preparation for the end of live service. But for now Brian, we currently don’t know how many people will be affected by that” said NCsoft spokesman David Swofford.

Tabula Rasa will be ceasing service on February 28th, 2009, just a month after Hellgate: London is dropped by Namco Bandai. Users will be able to play for free starting January 10th, which means the $12 I spent on the title a few months ago won’t goto waste!  Midway isn’t the only company in trouble.
