Halo MMO was not a prototype, had been green lit with a 40-strong development staff.
In an interview posted today, Ensemble Studios technology chief Dave Pottinger stated, “It had actually been green-lit, and then it got cancelled [sic] after that.” Pottinger further stated that the company had been trying to create an MMO for alone time.
“Ensemble has been wanting to make an MMO for a long time. Microsoft… hasn’t had the best track record with those,” he said, likely referring to the cancellations of True Fantasy Live and Marvel Universe Online. The title would have been set earlier than the origina Halo: Combat Evolved, but was canceled due to internal reorganization at Microsoft. “And then there was some reorganization at Microsoft, and the new bosses thought it wasn’t the best idea any more.”
You should recall that Ensemble itself is soon to go the way of their Halo MMO. Microsoft announced a few months ago that the studio would be closed upon the completion of Halo Wars, to which Pottinger said “honestly doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
