Bungie announces that projects based on new intellectual property is not bound to be released for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
Late last year, Bungie made a shocking announcement that they had bought themselves back from Microsoft, thus becoming an independent developer once again. The stunning announcement left many wondering if Bungie would be bound to make titles only for their former owner’s platforms. The answer is “No”, according to Bungie community and PR director Brian Jarrard.
“No, we’re not [tied to 360 for new IP],” Jarrard said at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this month. “We haven’t gotten that far yet to be totally honest. In theory we do have every means to go out and find the right ecosystem, the right partners, to align with. So who knows what the future will bring us.”
While they may not be legally bound to the 360, that doesn’t mean Bungie will be actively looking to release elsewhere. “For us the 360 has been great because there’s just been this great synergy with Bungie because all of our games have this inherent social community aspect,” Jarrard said. “Everything we’ve ever done has this very big online component — we, together with the Xbox consoles, have continued to push that Live experience, the whole notion of a party experience forward. I like to think that we brought a lot of that to the market, and we want to keep iterating on that.”
